New studies reveals the side effect of a drug for epilepsy

There was a new study suggesting that pregnant women who use Topamax during their pregnancy can have greater chances that their offspring will have a cleft palate. Accordingly Topamax is a brand of drug that treats seizure for people who have epilepsy. This finding also made people filed Topamax lawsuit since many of them had children with birth defects.

Topamax is an anti-convulsant used to treat epileptic seizures in children and adults, and is also prescribed to prevent migraine headaches. Topamax can result in cleft lip or cleft palate – birth defects that occur when the lip or palate fail to completely fuse together. The defect can result in a small, notched lip or in extreme cases, an open groove that extends from the roof of the mouth to the nose.
