Shanghaied! Dreaming of Shanghai

shanghai2

Shanghai has been my fascination City. One of my colleague went there last 2008 since then Shangahai is a dream. Rising from the banks of the Yangtze River Delta, it is China’s largest city. It is one of the most important commercial and financial center in the far east. Shanghai is also a witness of China’s transformation form communism to consumerism.

Some added information of Shanghai:

  • It is the birthplace of the Chinese communist party when 13 delegates, including Mao Zedong met on July 13, 1921. The site of the historical meeting now sits a global icon Starbucks Coffee.
  • In the 1890s China lost its war on Opium. So the government was pushed to grant British and other European to settle in the area. The new settlement brought about trade and commerce. These new settlers also bring new ideas and products from the Western world.
  • During the 1930s Shanghai was called the “Paris of the East“. There are so much wealth that was spent in construction of buildings and boulevards. This was the height of Shanghai’s decadence.
  • Accordingly in 1985 there was only one skyscraper in Shanghai but now there are more than 400 and still counting. It now rivals it’s neighboring Tokyo as well as HongKong.
  • The official population of Shanghai now stand at around 20 million, 3 million is unregistered migrants from provinces lured by the growth of the city.

I hope to be there soon, how about you?  :D
